Brno is located in the very heart of Europe. After Prague, it is the second largest city in the Czech Republic with a population of almost 400,000. Brno is situated in a picturesque basin on the crossroads of European motorways. It has an international airport and is rightfully considered as an important railway hub.

At the 20th century, It was the centre of industry and trade but also of education and culture. Among its well-known personages were Leoš Janáček, Viktor Kaplan, Jiří Mahen and Bohuslav Fuchs.

In 1990 Brno became the seat of important national institutions and today we will find there the Supreme Administrative Court, Supreme Court, Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic and the Supreme Prosecutor’s Office. Brno is also a city with many universities and colleges. At present there are five public universities: Masaryk University, Brno University of Technology, Mendel University in Brno, Janacek’s Academy of Performing Arts, University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Brno University of Defence

David Ford has been awarded with the E J Fox Medal* for services to the industry and, in particular, for his voluntary work as Secretary General of the EICF

Saturday 15th October 2016

Steve Irwin as Chairman of the EICF presented this award to Dr. Ford at the Institute of Cast Metals Engineers’ (ICME’s) annual awards luncheon.

In his own words Steve said :

"As I said to David at the award luncheon, it was both an honour and a privilege to join so many esteemed colleagues from the world of casting in celebrating and recognising David’s huge contribution to both the EICF and the wider investment casting community".

In a thank you letter penned to both John Townsend (President of the ICME) and the General Council of the ICME, David thanked the ICME for honouring him with the award, commenting that ‘… awards given by one’s colleagues are always the most precious’.

In due course, an ICME Awards article will appear in the Foundry Trade Journal.
